New scanning electron microscope for quicker spectral analysis.

For now 30 years already, namely since 1983, development and quality at GUIDO utilize inhouse scanning electron microscopes (SEM) for their work. SEM provide an image resolution down to 1 nanometer (for comparison, a human hair measures 100.000 nanometers in diameter) while at the same time offering a depth of focus at least 10 times higher than a good light microscope.

These characteristics in combination with the possibility to quickly determine the chemical composition of the specimen in view through x-ray spectral analysis (EDX) make these devices a necessity in material science work.

Summer break at GUIDO was well used to replace the existing SEM with a new unit employing the latest technological advances. Spectral analysis (EDX) now can also be made in a much quicker and more accurate fashion, eliminating the need for liquid nitrogen cooling.

An investment to ensure GUIDO technological leadership also in the future.
